Luton is famed for its hat making and was the UK’s main centre for lady’s hat production in the 19th and 29th centuries. Fusing flimsy material such as straw into light, highly efficient structurally robust objects – not to mention the highly creative design – by the practitioners of Luton’s plaiting and hat making industries, demonstrates a direct relationship with the manipulation modern day equivalents used in building such as steel, structural meshes, tensile fabrics and carbon fibre that are necessary for building and modern industries that remain core to Luton today, such as cars, aerospace and precision instrumentation. Fusion endeavours to draw upon this transformative tradition, linking the history through to the energetic present, by creating a building with a story that is deeply embedded within Luton’s very own particular narrative. The idea being, a building that belongs to and is borne of Luton.
